Ian Cohen – Candidate for Byron Council 2021

Since the early 80’s Byron Shire has been my home. I fell for the physical splendour both in and out of the ocean and with a heady New Age culture emerging, it was inspiring and I was moved to protect it. Byron became a symbol of an active community prepared to taken on the power elites. I’d found a ‘future to believe in’ and pursued my passion for the next 40 years.

I’m a Green because I believe in our responsibility to protect what’s precious. Byron’s history is valiant but we need to be stronger if we are going to preserve our home against extreme pressure and uncertainty.

In the 1980’s, I established the Byron Bay Radiation centre and campaigned against ocean outfalls. In 1986 I founded the Broken Head Protection Committee which is still active today highlighting inappropriate development in our most fragile environments.

I’m proud to have stood for over a decade alongside Arakwal Elders to gain their rights.

I was a founding member of the Australian, NSW and Byron Greens. In Parliament (1995 -2011) I advocated for the environment, social justice and my north coast community.

Prior to parliament I travelled the country for major campaigns, Daintree forest, Roxby uranium mining and the Franklin Dam. I also defended the north east forests and pursued their protection in Parliament.

I have worked with every manner of politician and bureaucrat over the years. I’ve been a chair of a Parliamentary committee and investigated many important issues. I want to remain a part of local change and to make a significant contribution on Council.
