Duncan Dey – Mayoral & Lead Candidate for Byron Council 2021

I’ve been a Byron Shire resident and a member of Byron Greens since 1994. With six years as a Councillor on two previous Councils and with decades as a member of many Council advisory committees, I know how council works, how complex it is and how to get things done. I’m a Civil Engineer specialised in flood analysis and water & sewerage management. I bring those skills to the role as well as my experience with community groups in Australia and overseas.

Byron Shire is an extraordinary place, with a bold history of community vision and activism borne of the Aquarius movement and early alternative settlers. The Greens have played a significant part in protecting the Shire and I will continue that. We have always supported First Nations rights, including the Arakwal Indigenous Land Use Agreement and will continue to do so.

In this biodiversity hotspot, the Shire is bounded by protected natural areas that are the outcome of dedicated community and council advocacy. On Council in 2004, we took Council’s first action on climate change by adopting a “Byron Shire Greenhouse Action Strategy”. I’m proud have been part of these achievements and will continue to advocate for our non-voting species, including Koalas.

The Shire is now under extreme pressure again. We have to make Council processes open and transparent so the community is informed and involved. The upcoming elections present the opportunity to redefine our future. With our local Member of NSW Parliament Tamara Smith, we have a direct voice to the NSW Government and can seek recognition & support for the ongoing protection of the Shire.

I’m ready to serve the community again, this time as Mayor. I offer myself, my team, our passion and our experience as the opportunity for delivering an ecologically sustainable and socially responsible future for Byron Shire.
