Byron Greens On Council

Byron Greens have a strong presence in local and state politics. At present we have one of our members in the State Upper House, and two members on Byron Shire Council including the Mayor.

Councillor Duncan Dey

Duncan is a grandparent and has lived in Main Arm, 10km west of Mullumbimby, since 1994.  He is a chartered Civil Engineer specialising in hydrology and has worked in aid projects in Mozambique, PNG and Timor-Leste.  He served two years on Byron Council 2002-2004.

In the 1990s he campaigned for the protection of the Brunswick River and in the 2000s to expose Woolworths’ rough-shod arrival in Mullumbimby.  He is very proud of The Greens’ four pillars of (i) ecological sustainability, (ii) social equity & economic justice, (iii) grassroots democracy, and (iv) peace, disarmament & non-violence.

He looks forward to serving the community again with a view to preserving our natural environment; improving Council operations and increasing community input to them; lifting the load off small developments and shifting it to big ones; completing the new Local Environmental Plan and getting to know the new NSW Planning Legislation.

Some Shire issues that Duncan will pursue on Council are:

  • good governance & better outcomes on tasks like road maintenance;
  • using Council’s Management Plan & Budget to monitor and improve its performance;
  •  making the Planning system as fair as possible;
  •  promoting music and reducing the impacts of mega-festivals;
  •  sorting out coastal erosion and holiday letting.
