Single parents from across Byron Shire gathered at Mullumbimby Community Gardens on Sunday to discuss the impact of recent cuts to the single parent payment.
The gathering provided an opportunity for single parents and concerned locals to share their stories about the challenges of working, raising kids and studying, while suffering recent cuts to the single parent payment.

Families shared stories with Greens Senate candidate, Cate Faehrmann and Greens Federal candidate for the seat of Richmond, Dawn Walker.

"Forcing sole parents onto Newstart will not tackle the problem of welfare dependency, in fact it will only push vulnerable families towards poverty. Local mothers have told me that they already have part time jobs, yet they will still lose between $100 and $200 per fortnight due to these cuts. " said Cate

“Today I call on the Labor Government to improve support for single parents and their families in the upcoming mid-term budget.

“If elected, I will work to reverse these unacceptable cuts to single parent payments and increase Newstart by $50 per week to support people transitioning back to the workplace” said Greens candidate for Richmond, Dawn Walker.

"One single mum told me today how disappointed she is in Labor's savage cuts to single parent payments. The Federal Government did not have the guts to stand up to the big miners and fix the mining tax, so they chose an easy target to boost revenue. I think it's nothing short of cruel to cut benefits to families who are already struggling to make ends meet" said Cate Faehrmann, Greens MP and lead Senate candidate.

An empowering outcome of meeting was the formation of a Byron Single Parents Action Group to advocate on behalf of single parents impacted by the recent cuts and support an increase to the Newstart allowance.
